Pixies are a hard band to catagorise. They played pop songs about biblical stories with surf guitars, grunge dynamics and interspersed Spanish lyrics. The result is frequently astounding, and always interesting. They lend themselves very easily to being the cult band they've become. Here's some reasons why...
Released in 1987 & 1988 respectively, Come On Pilgrim & Surfer Rosa show the band firing on all cylinders from their first releases, with great tracks like "Caribou" & "Levitate Me" on the EP and classics "Where is My Mind?", "Bone Machine" & "Gigantic" on Surfer. Filled with songs about odd topics such as scuba diving, black men's penises, prisoners requesting blood smeared dresses from their wives, Puerto Rico and incestuous relationships, they place Pixies firmly into a strange, surreal world. The music is filled with acoustic guitars, loud-quiet dynamics, Kim Deal's backing vocals and unexpected turns.
